M&MTB W2 No 509

M&MTB W2 no 509

M&MTB W2 No 509 at Bylands

No 509 was built by James Moore of South Melbourne in 1928, as a standard W2 class tramcar. As such, it is a fairly typical example of an original build W2, having a vent roof. For fifty years the W2 class of tramcar was the dominant type in use on the Melbourne system, with a total number of 406 tramcars, both as built and conversions from other types.

Along with all remaining W type tramcars, it was fitted with marker lights in the early 1970s.

No 509 spent its entire life allocated to Kew Depot.

This car was sold to a private buyer by the MTA in 1984, the late Mr. Norm Spiegelman, and is currently on loan to the TMSV by courtesy of his son John. It is intended to retain this tramcar in early 1980s M&MTB condition, although this is under some consideration.
