Tramway machinery

The Society preserves significant machinery involved with the operation of electric tramways, particularly in the area of power supply. This machinery is often spectacular in size and operation, but seldom if ever seen by the public. This machinery includes first generation machinery such as rotary convertors, which were used for stepping down voltage from high voltage supply to that required for traction. These were later superseded by mercury arc rectifiers and similar machinery, before the introduction of solid state electronics which swept all previous technology before it.
