Opening of Route 109 extension (2 May 2003)

The newest extension to Melbourne’s electric tram system was officially opened on Friday 2 May 2003 by the Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Steve Bracks MLA. The line runs along Whitehorse Road, from the former Union Road, Mont Albert terminus to a new terminus at Market Street (just short of Station Street) in Box Hill.

The TMSV supplied a historic touch for the opening by the means of horse tram number 253 (but not the motive power), which was loaned to Yarra Trams for the day.

Regular services on route 109 to Box Hill commenced on the following Sunday, 4 May 2003.
