M&MTB W6 No 996

M&MTB W6 No 996 at Bylands

M&MTB W6 No 996 at Bylands

No 996 was built in 1955 by the M&MTB Preston Workshops. Originally classified as an SW6 type tramcar, it was reclassified as a W6 following its re-equipment along with 29 other SW6 tramcars with resilient wheels, double helical gears and soundproofing as in the W7 class, for service on Bourke Street routes.

From time of building until the introduction of Z series cars in 1975, W6 tramcars were restricted for use on Bourke Street routes, which were regarded as the premier routes in Melbourne and were served exclusively by the newest tramcars until the introduction of A class tramcars in 1984.

On its displacement from Bourke Street routes, No 996 was transferred from Preston to Malvern Depot, before finishing up its service operating from Kew Depot.

This tramcar is one of eight tramcars on loan to the TMSV from the State Government. It was transported to Bylands on its withdrawal in 1991. This tramcar will remain in its final condition in green and gold Metropolitan Transit livery.
